Jacob's Ladder
Jacob's Ladder had been painted by many artists throughout the ages. We are blessed to have access to texts that were not available to the artists of the past. I have deeply researched this topic, and found apocryphal texts that described what Jacob saw in his dream. This is why my imagery is different from other artists.
I felt completely overwhelmed with this painting. I wanted to paint something prolific, yet I was having a conflict from possible blasphemy. The depiction of the face of God at the top of the ladder. This conflict, caused me to stop painting for several months, as I am one of those types of artists who can only focus on one 'masterpiece' at a time.
The hiatus in painting did not include the small oils that are eight inches by six inches. Those keep my practice up.
I had resumed the painting, finished the ladder and Jacob in May 2024, which was more than a year since I began. Finally, I had a dream where I realized, that Jacob was the only human who witnessed the face of God. That absolved my guilt, and I knew how to complete the painting. This final area at the top of the ladder including the clouds only took a half hour at the most.
